A Special Delivery!

I am so happy to announce that a special delivery is on its way! My husband Brad and I are expecting a new little addition to our family on February 1st! Coming up quite soon, actually! I've been meaning to create a blog post to announce the exciting news for quite sometime, but week after week has passed me by, and now I am at 32 weeks along! We are waiting to find out the gender, which has been quite a fun experience, although it did require a little persuasion on my husband's behalf.

The baby room is coming along, although there is definitely more work to do. A couple of weeks ago, my mom, my best friend, and I went on a hunt for a vintage dresser. We ended up going to 14 thrift shops, and finally found a winner after much perseverance. The dresser currently resides in my parents' garage where my mom is giving it a makeover. I will definitely share pictures as we make progress on the baby room!

Apple Pickin'

In true fall fashion, some friends and I took a little road trip to the apple orchard this weekend. It was the prettiest day for apple picking. Crisp blue sky. Plenty of sunshine. The perfect fall day. I made sure I took full advantage of all the orchard had to offer--namely it's delicious food. I indulged in some warm, fresh kettle corn, an apple fritter treat, and of course, I just had to have an apple right from the tree.

A Kansas City Weekend

My family and I spent the weekend in Kansas City and what a beautiful weekend it was! Minus a little bit of rain on Friday, it was mostly pure blue sky and fantastic weather. Our main purpose was to catch up with my brother, Kevin, who works for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was in town to play the Chiefs. Besides rooting on the Bucs and visiting with Kevin, we were able to slip in a little shopping as well. (You can see a little peek of my mom with the evidence in the bottom left picture. hehe).

Tomato Sandwich

I'm kinda obsessed with tomatoes right now. They just started popping up in my garden and since last year was such a bust, I'm really making it up for it this year! I made myself a tomato sandwich yesterday afternoon and it was just delicious. A few slices of a freshly picked tomato, a sprinkle of pepper and oregano, and just a little bit of spread (I'm a Miracle Whip gal myself). Such a tasty treat.

Letterpress at the Farmer's Market

I just finished up my last Farmer's Market this season and boy was it a hot one! The weather didn't exactly cooperate this year as we set up our booth in rain the first two Saturdays and endured the heat in the last three, but it still was a fun time. Since my products are all sold online or in retail stores that are not my own, I rarely get to see people's reactions to my designs. It is so fun to hear feedback regarding the various stationery designs and see which are customers' favorites!

War On Ugly Custom Business Cards

Since we're on the chipboard topic, I thought I'd share another project I just completed using chipboard. These business cards were created for a beauty salon in Australia called War on Ugly. The client provided the illustration of the two girls, and I was in charge of the layout design and letterpress printing. The idea was to show what services the salon could perform by showing a gal pre-salon on the front of the card and post-salon on the back. Such a fun project!

Jo+Greg Couple's Shower

I helped host a couple's shower for my friends Joanna and Greg over the weekend and I think it turned out quite well! The theme was an outdoor picnic, and although it was about 90 degrees outside, guests seemed to enjoy themselves bouncing back and forth between the air conditioning and the heat.

I was also in charge of designing and printing the letterpress invitations for the event. I used a super thick 40pt kraft board to portray more of a casual, picnic-y feel, and paired it with a bright red envelope for a nice contrast.

{Dinner Time} Indian Chicken

I tried my hand at Indian food the other night, and it actually didn't turn out too bad! I just love all of the spices and aromas that make up the dish. So very tasty. There definitely is a lingering aroma in the house, but well worth it.

Hoping to catch a few fireworks this weekend as I hang out with family and friends. Should be a great weekend! Happy Fourth to you!

Lamby Baby Shower

I had the honor of helping to host a baby shower for my best friend, Sallie, last weekend and finally have some pictures to share! The theme of the shower was all about lambs. Such a fun theme to work with. I had so much fun designing and printing the letterpress invitations as well as the little lamb pasture to house the beverages. Sallie's sister-in-law created an amazing diaper cake that turned out so cute! Can't wait to meet this little babe!

I simply love this time of year. The abundance of sunshine, blue skies, and fresh flowers make me smile. I become so inspired to eat fresh, healthy foods, made easier by the opening of farmer's markets around the area. I have the garden planted and ready to go with tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, and peas. Can't wait until I can add them to my plate!

Above are a few photos of our time in New York outside of the walls of the Javitz center (where the stationery show was held). My husband, mom, and I were able to stay a couple of days after the show to dabble around one of my favorite cities. While it did rain and rain...and rain some more, we didn't let put a damper on our plans. Armed with our umbrellas, we combed pretty much the entire borough while discovering little cafes, boutiques and pretty landscapes along the way.

National Stationery Show 2011

It's my first week back from the National Stationery Show and I have a brand new list of things to do. I had such a great time at the show. It really was a fantastic experience. For my first time at the show, I exhibited with the Ladies of Letterpress—such a wonderful group to work with. It was so great meeting my fellow Ladies of Letterpress booth mates as well as other letterpress printers from across the country. I can't wait to go back next year!

I can't believe it's finally done. I've been hard at work over the past few months creating new products, revamping my old product photos, and making over my website, and it's finally ready to share! I am pleased to present my new Paper Lovely website. I needed a way to include both my design services as well as my letterpress offerings all in one place, so the site needed to be overhauled to incorporate both of these services in a clean and organized manner.

That's Elmer. He's looking up at me wondering when his mom will take a break and play with him for a bit. I have to admit, the amount of attention he is receiving has been greatly diminished over the past few weeks as I continue to get ready for the National Stationery Show. Poor guy. We were able to squeeze in a walk today, so that gave him a little extra bounce in his step. Less than 5 weeks to go!

Yikes. That's one heck of a mess. I've really been kicking it in gear these past few weeks trying to get ready for the National Stationery Show in May. Oh gosh. May. As in next month May. Eeee! Actually, after last week's progress, I am feeling pretty good about my current state. I made great strides in creating my press kit, wholesale catalog, business cards, and also in updating my website...and have somehow managed to stay on top of my client projects as well. I'm so excited to be joining forces with the rest of my group, the Ladies of Letterpress, in booths 2362, 2364, 2366 and 2368. If you're attending the show, come visit us!

I still have many things to accomplish before the show, but plan on taking it one day at a time. Hopefully, I'll have a nice and clean "after" picture of the studio to share soon!

Custom Baby Feet Stationery

Macy's mother, Adrienne, got in touch with me not too long ago looking for cards she could use as thank you notes for all of the wonderful baby gifts she received. I illustrated these baby feet for her and printed them on thick, 300gsm Crane paper. And of course, the thank you notes wouldn't be complete without matching pink envelopes!

Jo & Greg Save the Dates

The bridesmaid assembly team, including myself, was going strong last night working on these save the dates for our friends Greg and Jo. A bottle of wine later, the twine had been tied, the pictures glued, and the envelopes addressed and stuffed.Whew! We were all really pleased with how they turned out!

Pancakes

Lately, I've fallen into the routine of whipping up a batch of pancakes on Saturday morning and pairing them with a steaming hot cup of coffee straight from my french press. I'm really loving these pancakes, which I make without any flour. Based on the ingredients, you may wonder how in the world this could make a pancake, but they really are a delicious healthy alternative to traditional pancakes! Here is what you need:
1/2 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup cottage cheese
2 or 3 egg whites
1 packet sugar subsitute (or real sugar if you prefer)
1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
*I also use a pinch of baking soda so that the pancakes fluff up a bit when on the skillet.

Blend mixture, then pour into individual pancakes onto the skillet. Add a little syrup and have yourself a great morning!

Spring is in the air?

Brad surprised me with these pretty little tulips for Valentine's day, and paired with this amazing 67 degree weather today, it is starting to feel like spring! Unfortunately, it's not supposed to last much longer, but what a welcome break from old man winter. The weather has given me a sense of motivation and I've actually had a pretty productive week so far sketching some new designs for spring! Can't wait to share!

I had such a wonderful weekend. Friday night, my mom and I had a night out on the town and attended the Mary Poppins musical. It was so full of bright and cheery colors, accompanied by wonderful voices and dancing. A really great performance. And that Mary...boy, was she fantastic!

And, of course, Happy Valentine's day to everyone! Brad and I will probably lay low this evening...maybe watch a movie or two, hopefully while indulging in a scoop of ice cream, or perhaps a piece of cake.

Custom Mini Cards

Just finished printing these little mini cards for Gino. Basically, a mini variation of the personalized letterpress cards I offer in my shop. I was thinking these little guys would be perfect around the office or maybe to leave a little note to your sweetie. Nice and simple, ready for any note you would like to jot down. And, if you wanted to get really fancy, how fun to pair it with a tiny envelope!

Minestrone Soup

I must say, I made quite the mean bowl of minestrone soup last night. Pretty proud of myself. It was my first time making this soup, and I think I will definitely make it again. A little bit of zucchini, tomatoes, kidney beans, whole wheat rotini, lean beef, seasoning and a load of onion and garlic...just to keep the breath fresh. Best part is, I just slammed it in the crock pot and went about my day! Such a great and healthy meal for a chilly winter evening.

I finally finished rephotographing all of my letterpress goodies for the shop face lift, and now it seems I have a bit of a mess on my hands. Props and stationery is strewn all over the studio, so needless to say, I will be devoting some time over the weekend to get things back into shape. Besides a little organization time, I'll be working on getting my new photos prepped and ready for their online debut! Looks like I have a productive weekend ahead of me. Things have been rather quiet in the studio as I've been enjoying the past couple of weeks soaking up the California sun! I've tasted so much wonderful food, including this very elaborate bowl of steel cut oatmeal infused with berries and flaxseed oil. I tell ya, I usually have oatmeal about every morning, but this one takes the cake. So good!

I'm pretty pumped for this weekend because we're sneaking away on a little day trip to Nebraska City to do some apple picking! I just love driving along the open road and taking in all of the wonderful fall colors. Besides our little road trip, we have a wedding, birthday party, and my husband's high school reunion to attend, so there definitely won't be a dull moment this weekend. Whoa...October? Boy, September was definitely a blink of an eye! We've had some beautiful fall weather here in Omaha and it looks like it will continue on into the weekend. I have lots planned over the weekend including painting our kitchen and also a little website updating. Everything is getting a makeover this weekend! It's been a little quiet on the blog front as I was in Seattle for a few days for the Husker vs. Husky football game. A first-timer to Seattle, I enjoyed exploring all of the wonderful sites the city has to offer. One of my favorite areas was the Pike Place market. So many fresh fruits, flowers, and fish. And, of course, I just had to visit the original Starbucks. Such friendly people and a truly beautiful landscape. I had a wonderful time!

Well, after almost 5 years of owning our home, the Mr. and I have decided that we're ready to freshen up the look of our kitchen. Currently a bold coffee house red, we'll be digging out our paint brushes and a whole lot of primer to change the walls over to a soft buttery yellow. And, of course, I will be needing some new kitchen towels to complete the makeover! I'm thinking about punching it up with these tea towels from sweetnature designs. Such fun, fresh illustrations sure to brighten up any kitchen.

Excited to take some time with my mom today to celebrate her birthday! It's a milestone birthday today...60! (shhhh....I didn't tell you that). Of course, my first loves are the coffee and custom latte pincushions (complete with latte art! eee!) but the cup of tea is really a close second with its sweet little red tag.

Looks like the Girl Scouts had a bit of a makeover! I made it all the way to the Cadette level before parting with my sash. Really liking the fresh new look of their branding. It's amazing how just subtle changes, like adding bangs to the girl, will make such a different visual impact.

Just came across these string gardens by Amsterdam horticulturist, Fedor. I would just love to fill my home with flowers and greenery hanging from the sky! Watering could be a little tricky I suppose, but definitely a very unique way to display a garden.

Happy Friday to you all! I have week four of the Midtown Crossing Outdoor Market ahead of me, which I'm looking forward to. I must say, we have gotten the set up down pat. The first time we participated in the market it took us 1 1/2 hours to set up, now we're down to about 20 minutes! Besides the market, I'll be spending time with friends and family, and maybe do a little letterpress printing. Have a wonderful weekend!

This is a bit more on the packaging end of things, but just couldn't resist this all-natural nut butter branding. I love how each label has the appropriate nut illustrated front and center, and even is accompanied by the additional flavor coating. This would definitely grab my attention in the grocery aisle.

DIY Felt Sign

Thought I'd share the sign I made for the outdoor market I've been participating in over the last few weeks at Midtown Crossing in Omaha. I found this tutorial on Craftster a while back and decided to give it a go. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.

I first had this black and white sign of my logo printed at the local Kinko's. It only only cost about $6 for a print out measuring 32" x 40".

And, of course, Elmer had to come over and check it out too.

In addition to the print out, I purchased some fabric and felt that matched the Paper Lovely colors, some fabric glue, a mat board to glue the fabric pieces onto, and then just gathered my scissors and stapler.

I started the sign assembly process by covering my mat board with the textured cloth and securing it with a few staples.

Next, I cut out the shapes of my logo from the paper sign and began tracing them onto the fabric and felt pieces. I started with the larger shapes, and worked my way inward to the letters.

The real time sucker was cutting out all of the individual letters in the logo, tracing them onto the felt, and then cutting them out from there. I was having trouble finding a pen that worked on the felt, so I ended up gluing the paper cutouts onto the felt (backwards) and then cutting around the paper letters to get the felt letter shapes.

The little heart was my favorite part.

After applying a little fabric glue to each individual shape, I eventually had my logo in fabric form!

I think it really helped add a little life to my booth. I wanted to keep it flexible by doing it on a lighter board so that if I ever wanted to hang it, I could do that as well. Although creating the sign is not difficult to do, it is very time consuming, but I think very worth it!

I stumbled across the artwork of Oiive over the weekend, and just couldn't get enough of her cute little designs. I love the soft muted colors she uses in these particular patterns. What I especially love about the house pillow is that the little sign above the door can be customized with an address or other message free of charge! What a great housewarming gift that would make!

I think I'm finally getting organized enough where I won't be up until midnight the night before finishing up packaging, signage, and such!
